Di nuovo nei Pro
Ripercorrendo la stagione trascorsa in Lega Pro, alla memoria affiorano subito i due derby vinti con la Reggiana e i playoff. Ma andiamo con ordine.
L’annata 2016-2017 parte in salita: l’inizio con il Modena, il 27 agosto 2016, non è tra i migliori, nonostante l’esodo massiccio di tifosi. In realtà buona parte del girone di andata è costellato da risultati altalenanti, con alcune cocenti sconfitte, che portano purtroppo all’esonero del mister Gigi Apolloni e di tutto il suo staff. Il suo posto viene preso da Roberto D’Aversa, pochi giorni prima delle trasferte di Bolzano e Reggio Emilia. L’esordio è buono, vittoria corsara per 0-1 su di un campo abbastanza ostico.
Ma l’attenzione di tutti è rivolta verso il derby contro gli odiati cugini reggiani, che manca da vent’anni. E’ l’ultima gara del girone di andata. Per riscaldare ancora di più gli animi dei tifosi, al Tardini viene effettuato l’allenamento di rifinitura a porte aperte, davanti ad un bagno di folla.
Arriva finalmente lunedi 19 dicembre 2016. La serata è fredda ed umida, ma al Mapei Stadium l’atmosfera è rovente! Davanti a quasi 18.000 spettatori (di cui 3.000 crociati) si respira aria da grande evento. Il Parma, per le posizioni in classifica delle due squadre, parte da sfavorita, ma con una gara perfetta vince il Derby per 0-2, grazie ai gol di Giorgino prima (minuto 23) e Baraye poi (minuto 30).
Alla fine è solo festa gialloblù! Mi vengono ancora i brividi ripensando a quanto accaduto sul terreno di gioco prima, durante e dopo l’incontro!
Sulle ali dell’entusiasmo, quattro giorni dopo, al Tardini, la prima giornata del girone di ritorno termina con un’altra netta vittoria del Parma. La vittima designata, nel secondo derby consecutivo, è il Modena (3-1). L’anno si chiude in bellezza a Lumezzane, dove va finalmente a segno anche Capitan Lucarelli, passando alla storia come l’unico crociato, terzo italiano in assoluto, ad aver segnato in tutte e quatto le categorie A, B, C e D (in precedenza era già accaduto a Lorenzo Pasciuti nel Carpi, in gol in A, B, C1, C2 e D e a Raffaele Rubino nel Novara, a segno in A, B, C1 e C2.
La rimonta sulla prima in classifica, il Venezia, è notevole, e la ripresa dalla sosta invernale inizia con lo scontro diretto in laguna: una vittoria porterebbe il Parma ad insidiarne il primato. Il 29 gennaio 2017 si assiste ad un vero e proprio sbarco crociato sull’isola di Sant’Elena. Il settore ospiti del vecchio e diroccato Penzo è tutto gialloblù. La squadra parte alla grande e nel giro di 20 minuti si porta sullo 0-2 con i soliti Baraye e Nocciolini. Purtroppo però, anche a causa dell’uomo in meno, il risultato finale è fissato sul 2-2 in extremis.
Questo risultato, apparentemente negativo, non ferma le velleità di primato della squadra che, nelle sfide successive, sfodera una serie di vittorie condite da prestazioni di altissimo livello.
Ricordiamo tra tutte la vittoria in rimonta (3-2) sul Pordenone, sotto al diluvio, con i gol nel minuti di recupero di Munari prima e Calaiò poi (probabilmente suo il gol più bello della stagione, con una semirovesciata da antologia calcistica) e quella dilagante sulla Sambenedettese, sempre in rimonta, per 4-2.
All’inizio della primavera qualcosa però si guasta e qualche pareggio fa aumentare la distanza dalla capolista Venezia, che non perde un colpo; arrivano anche delle sconfitte inaspettate, intervallate ad alcune convincenti vittorie come a Padova (1-2) e nel derby di ritorno con la Reggiana al Tardini (1-0), ancora sotto al diluvio, con gol, tanto per cambiare, del “Maestro” Yves Baraye.
L’adrenalina dei Play-off
Finisce quindi la Regular Season con il Venezia promosso direttamente in B e il Parma che deve giocarsela nei lunghi, lunghissimi e caldissimi playoff. Con le batterie ricaricate e la consapevolezza di essere la squadra da battere, ci sbarazziamo del Piacenza e della Lucchese.
Si arriva alla Final Four a Firenze, che vede Parma, Alessandria, Pordenone e Reggiana contendersi la vittoria dei playoff e la promozione in B. Nella prima semifinale il Parma affronta ancora una volta il Pordenone; come per le due sfide di campionato anche questo scontro è per cuori forti. In vantaggio per 1-0, la compagine crociata si fa raggiungere sull’1-1 a 10 minuti dalla fine, dopo aver subito per quasi tutto il secondo tempo (le mie pulsazioni, da fermo, nel secondo tempo, toccavano i 120 bpm!). I tempi supplementari non vedono variare il risultato e di conseguenza si passa agli interminabili calci di rigore. Sugli scudi salgono il nostro portierone Frattali, che ne para ben due e l’intramontabile Capitano.
Proprio Lucarelli va deciso sul dischetto: potrebbe essere il lasciapassare per la finalissima! Mostrando sicurezza e freddezza come un infallibile cecchino, spiazza il portiere avversario e porta la squadra con un piede in B. L’esultanza sotto i tifosi è delirio e dolcezza allo stato puro!
Quattro giorni dopo, il 17 giugno 2017, si torna nuovamente a Firenze. La temperatura è torrida, ma non ferma l’invasione gialloblù. Sono infatti circa 8.000 i tifosi al seguito della squadra, che ormai sentono la promozione in Serie B ad un passo. L’avversario è l’Alessandria, che, nell’altra semifinale, si è sbarazzata facilmente della Reggiana. La gara non ha storia, il Parma, motivatissimo da un discorso emozionante e da film del Capitano, scende in campo sicuro di come sarà il risultato finale; dopo poco più di 10 minuti dal fischio d’inizio passa in vantaggio con Scavone e controlla la gara fino al 67′, quando Nocciolini segna il raddoppio. E’ finalmente Serie B!!!
E’ un trionfo! Giocatori e tifosi esultano tutti insieme e la festa continua durante la premiazione in campo.
Piazza Garibaldi a Parma è nuovamente affollata da centinaia di bandiere: è un tripudio di colori gialloblù, che prosegue ininterrottamente fino a notte fonda!

Going down memory lane, when thinking about Lega Pro Season, you are immediately reminded of the playoffs and the two derbies won against Reggiana. But let’s go through it.
Year 2016-2017 started badly: the first match with Modena, on August 27, 2016, was not one of the best, despite the mass exodus of fans. In fact, a big part of the first round was riddled with mixed results and some stinging defeats which led, unfortunately, to both Coach Gigi Apolloni and his staff’s dismissal. Roberto D’Aversa will take their place, just a few days before the away games in Bolzano and Reggio Emilia. A positive debut, Parma Calcio won 0 to 1, on an extremely bad field.
But all the attention was paid to the derby against our hated cousins from Reggio Emilia that we had been waiting for 20 years. It was the last competition of the first round. In order to cheer the fans up, the Tardini Stadium opened its doors for a work-out in front of a huge crowd.
December 19, 2016, finally came. It was a cold, humid evening but the atmosphere was burning at the Mapei Stadium! An audience of 18000 people (3000 of them came from Parma) was feeling the enthusiasm of a big event. Parma Calcio, according to the ranks, was at the time considered the underdog, but at the end it won the derby 0 to 2. Giorgino (23rd minute) and Baraye (30th minute) scored two goals.
And the party is yellow and blue! I still get goose bumps just thinking about what happened after the game.
Still caught up in the excitement, four days later, at the Tardini Stadium, the first game of the second round ended with another clean victory. This time, the intended victim was Modena (3-1). The year ended on a really high note, in Lumezzane, where our Captain, Lucarelli, finally scored a goal, making history as the only crusader, third in Italy, to score in each division (A, B, C and D). It happened before only to Lorenzo Pasciuti, who played for Carpi (A, B, C1, C and D), and Raffaele Rubino, Novara (A, B, C1 and C2).
The comeback towards the number one on the list, Venice, was remarkable and the new season, after winter break, started with a straight-fight in the lagoon: a victory would have let Parma take away their record. On January 29, 2017, we witnessed an actual Crusader’s landing on the island of Santa Elena. The guest sector of the old, ruined Penzo was colored in yellow and blue. Everything was going great for Parma and within 20 minutes Baraye and Nocciolini scored. But, unfortunately, maybe beacuse we had one man down, the final result was 2-2.
This apparently negative result did not put a stop to the ambitions of the team which then drew a series of victories and top performances.
Amongst all, the victory over Pordenone (3-2), under the pouring rain, when Munari scored during added time, followed by Calaiò (it was probably the best goal of the season, with a major semi scissor-kick) and then the one over Sambenedettese (4-2).
However, at the beginning of spring, something went wrong and a series of draws increased the distance from the leading team Venezia which was not skipping a beat. Then some unexpected defeats, interspersed with other convincing victories, like the ones in Padova (1-2) and at the Tardini Stadium against Reggiana (1-0), still under the pouring rain and with a goal of the “Maestro” Yves Baraye, just for a change.
The Adrenaline of the playoffs
Regular Season therefore ended with Venice being promoted to Serie B and Parma having to manoeuvre the long, troubled playoffs. With our batteries recharged and aware of being the team to beat, we got rid of Piacenza and Lucchese.
Then it was time for Final Four in Florence where Parma, Alessandria, Pordenone and Reggiana would compete for victory and promotion to second division. During the first semi-final, Parma had to face Pordenone once again; like the two matches during championship, even this game was for the hardest of hearts. In the lead for 1 to 0, the Crusaders were then 1 to 1 just ten minutes towards the end, after a pained second half (standing still, my heart rated 120 beats per minute!). The extra-time did not change the result, so we got to the infinite penalty kick. On field, our goal keeper Frattali, who parried two balls, and our timeless Captain.
Lucarelli, precisely, moved with decision towards the penalty spot: that moment could be the pass to the big final. Confident and detached like an infallible sniper, he wrong-footed the goalie and brought the team a step forward to second division. The celebrations in front of the fans were a pure mix of frenzy and sweetness.
June 17, 2017, four days after, we went back to Florence. It was hot but that did not stop the yellow-blue invasion. Indeed, there were approximately 8000 fans who followed the team that day, feeling the promotion in their pockets. The enemy was Alessandria, which, during the other semi-final, got easily rid of Reggiana. No contest: Parma Calcio, prompted by an emotional discourse of the Captain, took the field knowing the ending result. Ten minutes after the starting whistle, Parma took the lead thanks to Scavone and then controlled the game until the 67th minute, when Nocciolini scored goal number 2. Parma was officially in Serie B!!!
A triumph! Players and fans celebrated all together and the party went on during the award ceremony on field.
Piazza Garibaldi (Parma) was filled with hundreds of flags: it was a feast of colors, yellow and blue, that carried on without interruption all night.
